Grendal wasn't able to be pierced with swords yet Beowulf could rip his arm off...I don't get it. I mean yes Beowulf is strong and at his prime, but isn't it generally harder to rip something apart then it is to cut it?

What you say is true, but doesn't the hero have to succeed even when it seems impossible? I think that the battle was basically good verses evil, and the good always seems to win.
Sandra, you're right about that. However, I think that the reason the story was told this way was because in the traditional archetype, the hero must face the "darkness" alone. By making everyone else incapable of helping Beowulf, he is basically facing Grendel alone.
I was confussed when the fight took place so soon. Which i think means that the battle is far from won. Grendel is only inmune from blades of metal, so beowulf shows his strength and braveness when he touches the monster with his bare hands.
I think this was cleared up today when Mr. Lazarow explained that Beowulf didn't actually rip Grendel's arm off- Grendel did it himself. You're right, Lydia, good does always seem to win, but this time it was because evil defeated itself.
