I think that grendel can be anyone who falls to tempation of evil in the darkest of hours (or night). They go to the hall in order to express their ulitmate power but people can do terrable things to each other, could grendel just be a part of everyone's imagination so they dont have to take the blame? could this charactor that the anglo-saxtons talk about be their way of saying that these murders happen due to human fights?
Grendel shows power to all the danes and other families by taking over the Herot Hall. He cant go near the throne and i think that shows determintaion and weaknesses in Grendel towards himself. The monster could be defeated some how if the danes or the powerful lord can trick him. We dont know much about this monster but if no one stops it the whole community could be dead. What can they do to stop him? I think the Lord will help someone make a right decision.

I believe that Grendel does symbolize the alter ego that everyone has. Grendel's symbolic character applies to every human because we all have a weakness. Grendel's weakness is going to the throne. He seems to have a few the characteristics of a hero, even though he doesn't seem to present them by killing everyone who decides to sleep in Herot. He has weakness', he's different than everyone else kind of like Spiderman, or Superman etc. Unfortunately, he is not saving lives, he is the monster that everyone is trying to be saved from.
Is there a reason why Grendel only kills at night and only at Herot? He clearly has the strength to kill anyone at any time and place he pleases. Also, could one of Grendel's purposes in this story be to keep the Danes in check and willing to take arms against the forces of evil at all times? I think the story relates to the human nature to battle evil and temptation and the Danes will eventually band together to take down Grendel.
I actually think that Grendel only attacks at night in Heorot because that is where all the celebrating takes place. He has the strength to attack whenever he wants to. But, he is jealous of the partying going on in the hall, so in order to stop it, he attacks whoever is there. Symbolically, he only attacks at night because of the association between darkness and evil. After today’s discussion in class, I see Grendel as the symbol of all evil and negativity. As Mr. Lazarow put it, he represents the negativity in human nature. He could be greedy and corrupt (as Lydia suggested), envious, or barbaric.
As we said in class before stories are based on real life, they are put in a way so that they are entertaining, but the whole story is a representation of life. For this reason i believe that Beowulf represents the good in every person and Grendal represents the "evil" in every person. The fight between the two represents the internal fights that every person goes through on a daily basis. Our whole life we strugle to be "good". With every desicion we make we get closer or farther to/from the "good" side. I think that the reason that Gredel only kills those in the hall because what goes on in the hall is being part of society, the society he has been ostracized from. It's kind of like, if I can't be part of society then niether can they. An I'll show them kind of thing. I guess it's also kind of vengence. I agree that he attacks at night because of the link between darkness and evil. It is also because of the cover of darkness.

Examples of how Grendel Represents greed and corruption:
He only attacks at night and darkness symbolizes evil and all things bad, so Grendel is corrupted by evil.
Cain was greedy and Grendel is related to Cain so he represents Cain's disobediance to God, and greed is a bad thing.

-THE Dan Mullin
Dan, I think grendel only attacks at night because hes is cursed to be an outcast. Also night is usually paired with evil.
