The Canterbury Tales

Why does Chaucer put such an emphasis on the Catholic Church and Christianity?

I think the reason Chaucer puts an emphasis on Catholicism is because at the time of the Middle Ages, religion was the largest component of everyone’s life, the Church even took part in government. Chaucer was writing about what he knew and cared about.

i agree except that catholicism in the canterbury tales was less of what Chaucer cared about and more of a criticism of the church. the parson is the only church figure that chaucer speaks highly of and it seems like he does this as an example of what members of the church should be like, but are not.
