Beowulf's retelling of the fight against Grendel.

Was the fight vs. Grendel a practice match for when Beowulf fights the Dragon?

when Beowulf tells Hygelac about Grendel, he says that his skin was like a dragons. This might forshadow the outcome of later battles. Since Beowulf will have the experiance of dealing with a creature that is similar to a dragon, he may be able to defeat one.

I think beowulf tells Hygelac the tale of the fight more to fill Hygelac in on what happened. Althought it does seem like it could be foreshadowing of the fight with the dragon.

I don't think that Grendel was practice for the Dragon because he fought the two different ways. With Grendel, he battled hand to hand and with the dragon he used a sword and a daggar.

When beowulf goes to fight the dragon, he understands that he is weak but he is too proud to admit it. When beowulf goes to fight Grendel it is the moment where he has to prove himslef as a worrior. The fight agianst grendel is when Beowulf reliezes he is the greatest and by the time he is old and stubbern hes not going to reach out and ask for help. He wants his death to be glorious after defeating grendel he wants people to remember him in defeating the dragon. Really i dont think grendel was practice it was his first test in strenght and when beowulf was most humble. To the reverse when he feels his people should be humble to him when he fights his last fight.

im sure, especially from how we always answer these kinds of questions in class, that the poet did not mention that grendel's skin was like that of dragon by accident. whether it is foreshadowing or parallelism, the poet wanted to make the connection of the dragon and grendel.
