Today in class, we discussed about the coat of arms. I don't know if we ever discussed this today, but do we know how the idea of the coat of arms started or where it started. Was the coat of arms invented by someone?

The coat-of-arms came about at the end of the renaissance period as a way to identify knights on the battle field. With all of the armor and battle gear, it was hard to distinguish friend from foe. The coat-of-arms was put on the shield. Shields, however, were the most likely thing to get lost while fighting so; the knights could be identified by the heraldic codes on their helmets as well.
