Rope of Sand?

Why was the whole rope of sand thing important? it seemed like in class today it was just a cool image...

I think that the whole point behind the rope of sand was that having a rope of sand is pointless. Even if you harden sand and it turns to glass, it still is not binding. I think what the narrator is saying is that the rope cannot hold a person back; it is only binding if you want it to be because it is so easy to break. So, he is not going to let himself be bound, he is going to break free and pursue all the things he cannot do because of his collar.
